There’s a small industry based around finding an alternative way to play Blackjack and here we have an interesting option from Realistic Games. It has the slightly unwieldy title of Blackjack Perfect Pairs/21+3 and in fact that name gives the game away somewhat as to what extras are included here.

Blackjack Perfect Pair/21+3 is at heart a standard version of the game with some added on added on side bets to make things a little bit more interesting. There are three betting options in total and they’re explained in a little more detail below.

Basic Blackjack

This is the standard game played with six decks and it proceeds in the usual way although you have five positions on which to bet. The dealer distributes the cards and you must try to get as close as possible to a total of 21 and have a higher score than the dealer. After the deal your options are:

• Hit – take another card.
• Stand – stick with what you’ve got.
• Double – double your stake and receive one more card but only if your cards total 10 or 11.
• Split – split the cards if they have the same value and play both as individual hands.
• Buy Insurance – if the dealer has an A you will be offered insurance against a potential blackjack; it costs half your bet value and will pay 2/1 if a blackjack is revealed.

Perfect Pairs

This is the first side bet placed on the section labelled ‘Perfect Pairs’ and you are unsurprisingly looking to be dealt a pair with your first two cards. Pairs are paid out as follows:

• Mixed Suit Pair – 5/1
• Same Colour Pair – 10/1
• Perfect Pair (matching cards) – 30/1

21+3 Bet

If you fancy this you need to place your bet on the ‘+3’ section and you are hoping that your first two cards and the dealer’s face up card form a mini-poker hand. They are paid out as follows:

• Flush – 5/1
• Straight – 10/1
• Three of a Kind – 30/1
• Straight Flush – 40/1
• Suited Three of a Kind – 100/1

Verdict

The plus point of this version is that you can play the standard variant if you want or you can have a punt at the extra side bets. It’s an interesting game although the RTP doesn’t seem to be listed at the moment – Blackjack should normally be extremely high.
