There are numerous variations of stud poker and it’s the type of game which lends itself to small rule variations when playing at home. Some variants become more popular than others and Mexican Stud is one such game which appears to have grabbed a foothold in several American casinos.
Stud poker involves no draw or community cards, your hand will consist of the cards dealt to you. The aim of Mexican Stud is to create the strongest five card hand according to standard poker rankings. The game is played with an ante and a bring-in.
Mexican Stud Rules
After the antes have been placed, each player receives three cards face down from the dealer. Now the fun and uncertainty begins as each player must simultaneously reveal one of those cards to all other players by removing it from their hand and placing it on the table.
A betting round now follows, kicked off by the player with the highest face up card, during which players can do the following:
- Fold – discard the card
- Check – opt not to bet but remain in the hand
- Call – match the biggest bet placed so far
- Raise – increase the bet
Three more cards are then dealt to each player, one at a time with another betting round following. Again, following each deal players must pick one of their face down cards to be revealed to everyone else.
Ultimately each player will have six card in their possession, two face down and four face up. Now one more card is dealt face down to each player followed by a betting round and then the showdown, assuming that two or more players remain in the hand.
The winner is the player with the strongest five card hand according to standard high poker rankings.
