The legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table has formed the basis for several online slots we’ve played in the past and Microgaming subsidiary Quickfire now has one more to add to the list. Xcalibur – not to be confused with Net Entertainment’s Excalibur – is a classy five reel slot with two separate bonus features.
Xcalibur plays out over five reels and fifty paylines and the backdrop to this slot is a cloudy mountainous scene with Camelot just visible in the top left hand corner. Ornate playing card symbols represent the lower values on the reels but the higher values are symbolised by a helmet, a shield, the Green Dragon, Queen Guinivere and King Arthur.
Merlin is the scatter which triggers one of the features, the bonus key activates the other and of course the sword Excalibur is wild and can appear stacked on the reels.
Bonus Features
Free Spins
Merlin the wizard is the key to the feature here and you’ll trigger it if you can land three or more of his frowning face anywhere on the reels.
You will now receive 12 free spins and during this feature all your wins will be doubled. The bad news is that you can’t re-trigger the spins from within this game.
Key Bonus
There are a number of silver keys on reels two, three and four and if you can land three anywhere on these reels on the same spin this game will start.
The symbols on the reels will be replaced by eight doors and all you have to do is click on them at your leisure, collecting a multiplier of between 1x and 10x on your stake. When you find the ‘Collect’ symbol the feature is over and you will be returned to the base game with your winnings.
Xcalibur Online Slot Playing Tips
Both of the features are activated by scatter symbols which means you can play with as few or as many paylines as you like and still have the same chance of triggering them.
Verdict
This is not a bad time-waster and makes a nice addition to the King Arthur genre. Two separate bonus features mean there’s a little more excitement to be had.
