Not too long ago we reviewed an online slot from Hacksaw Gaming called Cubes with a clever gameplay mechanism – we now have the opportunity to try out Cubes 2 from the same developer and while the loss and feel remain the same there are some added extra features to spice things up a bit.
Cubes 2 begins with the 5 x 5 coloured grid you can see above – there are six different colours involved and the aim is to land clusters of matching colours vertically and/or horizontally; achieving this will add another row of cubes around the outside to form a 7 x 7 structure. Creating new clusters or adding to an existing one will increase the cube again to 9 x 9 and finally 11 x 11.
When there are no new wins the cube will shrink back down to 5 x 5.
All the cubes are worth the same prizes and come in yellow, light blue, red, green, pink and purple; there are no special symbols in this slot.
Cubes Bonus Features
Corner Multipliers
While the original game had a multiplier on the centre cube, this sequel has multipliers on all four corners and when they become part of a cluster they’ll multiply the prize by the number of cubes in that cluster.
If a cluster joins with two corner multipliers then those values will be added together.
Multi-colour Free Spins
This is triggered by landing the first spin with all four multiplier cubes in the same colour; you’ll receive between five and ten free spins but pick from the grey cubes first to determine which colour cubes are sticky for the whole round. This means that a cluster or clusters formed in that colour will lock in place for the whole round.
In addition once the grid has expanded it will not shrink again until the round ends.
Regular Free Spins
Landing at least five clusters in different colours will trigger this version of the free spins and reward you with an initial five free spins; pick from the grey boxes to grab a sticky colour and perhaps some extra spins the maximum is twelve.
Again those sticky colours are in force and the playing area won’r decrease between spins; also in this round collecting fifty, seventy or ninety of a particular colour will award 500x, 2500x or 7000x the stake respectively.
Verdict
Cubes 2 doesn’t improve hugely on the original but it certainly does enough to differentiate itself and offer plenty of cube-themed enjoyment; try both and see what suits!
