Hands up if you assumed that Australia didn’t particularly have much to offer in the way of an online gaming industry. Well as it turns out the home of the pokie is also home to one of the largest and most experienced gaming companies out there.
Aristocrat Leisure is the name of this company and it was founded as long ago as 1953 by Len Ainsworth. The Ainsworth family still maintain a significant shareholding in Aristocrat but also branched out to form Ainsworth Game Technology 1995, a company competing in the same marketplace.
Aristocrat is now the largest manufacturer of gaming machines in Australia and and is also one of the largest in the world following the 2013 acquisition of Video Gaming Technologies. It’s headquartered in Sydney but has offices around the world and employs more than 2200 people globally.
The company have been producing gaming machines since 1953 and the Australian obsession with gambling means that the home market has always been a lucrative one; the 1950s was a great time to start a gaming business down under as it coincided with the rise in popularity of the pokie – similar to an American slot but a contracted version of ‘poker machine’.
The experience gained in the market enabled it to branch out to other countries and in 1996 it was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Arguably it’s been a little late to the online slots party but Aristocrat now has an extensive back catalogue of games available which have been converted from their bricks and mortar version.
We expect to see more of this company’s slots as they percolate through to our favourite casinos but you can read our review of Pompeii here to give you a flavour of what’s available and the Reel Power feature. The good news is that Aristocrat uses a progressive jackpot network online as well as offline so there’s always some big prizes to be won.
